To Bulk or Not To Bulk?

‘Tis the season to be bulking… However, one of the biggest mistakes you can make when entering a bulking phase is to be carrying too much body fat to begin with.

When carrying higher levels of body fat (upwards of 15% for guys), your body is not in a particularly anabolic state. This means that as calories and weight increase, the ratio of muscle to body fat gained will begin to become unfavourable.

As well as lean tissue being harder to gain, we also create a bigger job for ourselves when it’s time to cut. Entering this phase having gained an excessive amount of body fat means that we’ll likely have to make harsher calorie drops in order to achieve our desired end result, assuming that there was a predetermined timeframe.

The consequence of these big drops is that we can very easily start chipping away at that hard earned muscle, in the battle to get body fat levels under control.

Assess your current position and decide if a recomp/mini cut would be beneficial in order to create a more anabolic environment for greater growth potential. If you’re going into a gaining phase simply because you cant be bothered to cut, there’s a good chance that you’ll find yourself back at square one this time next year.
